The Day Master, and what it costs

Free

Every other character in this chart is measured against one point: the Day Master. It is not the whole self, it is the vantage the self reads from — the thing that stays constant while the decades rotate around it.

The gift is real and it is the first thing people notice. The cost is the same trait with nothing to apply it to, and that is the half almost no reading will tell you. A chart does not describe a fixed personality; it describes a pressure and two ways of meeting it.

Which of those two you are living in right now is most of what this document is for.

Strength — and the specific way it fails

Free

旺相休囚死 asks a structural question before it asks anything else: is the Day Master being supported by the chart around it, or drained by it? The answer decides whether the correct move for this life is to be supported or to be channelled — and those are opposite instructions.

Most readings stop at the verdict. The useful half is the consequence. A strong chart does not fail by collapsing; it fails by scattering across too many viable directions. A weak chart does not fail through weakness; it fails by treating the need for support as a defect and refusing it.

This is not a flaw to be corrected. It is the shape of the failure when it comes, which makes it the thing worth watching for.

The elemental landscape

Free

Five elements, counted across eight characters. One will lead, one will be thin, and sometimes one is absent entirely.

An absent element is not a missing trait. It is a direction the chart keeps reaching toward and never quite holds, which is why people, work and places carrying that element tend to feel disproportionately important — attractive out of all proportion to their actual merits.

The counts are the raw material every later card works with: which environments feed this chart, which quietly drain it, and which decades amplify each.

藏干 — the private chart under the public one

4 / 14

The Heavenly Stems are the part of a chart other people meet. The Earthly Branches hold 藏干, the hidden stems — the same forces, rooted rather than displayed.

When a Ten God appears in a stem and is also rooted in a branch, that is 透干通根: visible and supported, a trait that both shows and holds. When it appears only in a stem it is performance without foundation, and it exhausts. When it sits only in a branch it operates entirely out of sight, and the person is often the last to know they have it.

This is the card that separates a reading from a horoscope. Everything above could be guessed from a birth year. Nothing here can.

十神 — what dominates, what is missing

5 / 14

Ten Gods describe relationships, not qualities: each one names how a force stands relative to the Day Master. Wealth, authority, output, support, competition — the same chart contains all of them in different proportions.

A dominant god sets the default. It is the move made without deciding to make it, the reflex under pressure. An absent god is just as loud: it marks the register this life does not naturally speak, and therefore the one it either avoids or over-corrects into.

格局 — the structure

6 / 14

格局 names what a chart is organised around. It is the closest thing BaZi has to a thesis statement: not a prediction, a structure, and structures behave consistently across very different lives.

Read against the strength verdict, a 格局 stops being a label and becomes an instruction. The same structure in a strong chart and a weak chart produces two people who would not recognise each other's problems.

用神 · 忌神 — what balances, what destabilises

7 / 14

用神 is the element that brings the chart toward balance; 忌神 is the one that pushes it away. Everything practical in BaZi descends from this pair.

Translated out of the jargon, they name environments rather than objects: seasons that feel easy, directions that reward moving, the colour and material of rooms that settle rather than agitate, and — most usefully — the kinds of people and work that restore energy versus the kinds that quietly spend it.

Four pillars, four chapters

8 / 14

年柱 holds ancestry and the early years: the inherited conditions, the family weather before there was any choice about it.

月柱 is parents and the origin of working life — the pillar that most often explains why a career began where it did rather than where it should have.

日柱 is the self and the spouse palace, the only pillar that describes both who someone is and who they reach for.

時柱 is children and late output: what gets made, and what remains after the making.

The honest card

9 / 14

A reading that only praises is worthless, and most paid readings are mostly praise, because praise does not generate refund requests.

The shadow is not a moral failing. It is the dominant god and the 忌神 operating under pressure, when there is no slack left for judgement. Every chart has a characteristic way of getting it wrong, and it is remarkably consistent — the same mistake, in different costumes, across decades.

Named plainly, it stops being a pattern and starts being a decision.

The spouse palace

10 / 14

The branch sitting directly under the Day Master is the spouse palace: the closest character in the chart to the self, and the one that describes the partner archetype this life keeps arriving at.

It also explains repetition — why the same relational pattern recurs with materially different people. Combined with the strength verdict, it says what this chart actually needs from a partner, which is frequently not what it says it wants.

財 and 官殺 — money and authority

11 / 14

財 comes in two forms. 正財 is earned steadily, in exchange for something delivered. 偏財 arrives in windfalls and openings, and behaves completely differently over a life.

官 and 殺 describe the relationship to authority: whether structure is protective or suffocating, and whether this chart does better inside an institution, at the head of one, or beside one as a specialist nobody manages closely.

大運 — the life as one arc

12 / 14

Luck pillars are not a list of decades. They are a single arc: a sequence in which the chart's 用神 is fed for a stretch, then starved for a stretch, then fed again.

Read as an arc, the turning points are visible in advance — not as events, but as changes in what the same effort will return. The decade someone is standing in explains far more about their current experience than any single year does.

The years that matter

13 / 14

Specific years, drawn only from the computed luck pillars and annual pillar — never invented, which is a claim most AI readings cannot make.

For each one: what it activates, and how to meet it. A difficult year met early is a different year from the same one met late.

The shape of the whole

14 / 14

The synthesis: the through-line running from the Day Master, through the structure, through the decades — what this life is built to do, as distinct from what it has been asked to do.

And the single most useful thing this chart has to say about itself, stated without hedging.

The three cards marked Free are what you get without paying, computed from your own chart. The other 11 are written for you.
